While My Guitar Gently Weeps by Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne & Prince

Ready for a snobby musician rant? Ok, here goes:

Normally I’d be excited by something like this. I love all three of those guys, and the beginning of this performance gave me chills even though somebody needed to turn up Jeff’s vocals in his monitor (see, I point this out so you think I know what I’m talking about).

Then Prince creeps on from the side of the stage like some diva and wanks all over everything. I was expecting him to do his thing and totally abandon Clapton’s original lead ideas (that’s what Mark Mann was there for, I guess—again pointed out to act like I know who that other lead guitar player is), but Prince basically ignored the entire band the whole time. Then when he’s done blowing his load he tosses his guitar and walks off stage without acknowledging anybody.

I don’t know why that bugs me, but it could have been better. And for that matter, the drummer could have given Prince a little more to play against. Maybe that would have pulled him back into the music. That’s what drummers are supposed to do (because I know, see, I play in bands). If someone else in the band is stepping out of line, go out there and kick his or her ass a little bit. Let the bass player hold the groove for a few bars.

Done.

Wow. He pretty much fucks it up in a way that I’m both mad at him and really impressed. I’m really not sure what to think. Pretty disrespectful… impressively so.
