If you’re just starting out, it can be difficult to stick to a regular workout regimen. Here are some tips on keeping on the game.
Set small goals and build on them: “I will go to the gym/workout for 20 minutes three times a week” is a great realistic place to start. After two weeks, “I will workout for 30 minutes four times a week” and so on.
Tell your friends: They will remind you of what you’ve set out to accomplish, even when you don’t want to hear it! Being able to talk about health and fitness with those close to you will keep you focused and motivated.
Buy comfortable and good looking workout clothing: The better you look, the better you feel. The better you feel, the easier it will be to get to the gym in your weakest moments. You’ll also remember that you’ve spent your hard earned gig money on clothes and you won’t want to let them go to waste.
Make a habit of it: Workout the same time each day. Develop a ritual of sorts. Maybe you need to eat in advance to feel energized. Maybe you need to workout on an empty stomach. Maybe you’re a morning person and you have to workout before your morning shower, etc. Try different combinations and stick to what feels right for you.
Make a workout mix: Pick high energy songs. Change the list often. Studies have shown that music can improve athletic performance. Take advantage!
Get enough rest: Getting enough sleep will give you more energy in everything you do, especially on days when you’d rather not work up a sweat.
Ignore your weight: Your weight fluctuates every day, several times a day. Muscle weighs more than fat, and being thin is not an indicator of a high fitness level. You may monitor your weight but don’t get yourself hung up on a specific number.
Read up: Fill your brain with current information on health and fitness on a daily basis. Information will help keep you inspired, engaged, and help you to become better at maintaining your new lifestyle.
Work hard, reward yourself: You deserve a day off each week. Don’t forget!
Brilliant article about motivation. This can apply to other things too, but its great for exercise.
