Does anyone watch TV/pay attention to adverts? Apparently two people have seen an advert that features me, with something to do with New York. I'm not really sure how/why I would be in an advert and think its a case of mistaken identity but if you see it, can you screen cap it/let me know what its an advert for?

Holiday greetings from New York!

I hope this message finds you well, warm & enjoying the festive season! I feel like I’m playing catch-up…I only just had my first eggnog of the year!!

Life is such a whirlwind at the moment that I wanted to take a solid moment to catch you up on what’s been happening…and to let you know all the exciting things that are on their way…

Back on the last day of September, at Angel House East in Brooklyn, we recorded the very last session of my debut album, Snow Globe.

It was to capture the vocals of my dear friend and inspiration, ambeR Rubarth (If you don’t know her work already…I can’t recommend her enough…her brand-new album, ‘Good Mystery’ is one of my all-time favorites).

It was a perfectly fitting end.

This whole chapter of my life started with ambeR being one of a handful of close friends and family who encouraged me to start writing music again after a four-year hiatus.

The song we wrote together “Where I Left You Last” officially marked an end to that break. It is the first song on the album.

During my break from songwriting, I was really just listening; mostly to the music of Tom Waits, Ani Difranco, George Gershwin, Randy Newman and of course ambeR. It was the sounds & honesty of these great songwriters that guided my writing for Snow Globe. And it was my amazing producer, Alex Wong, who was able to capture all the influences in my head and help create something new.

We did so, I kid you not, with some of the best musicians in New York.I’m talking drums, cellos, violins, clarinet, bassoon, double/electric bass, guitar, glockenspiel and more. The musicians who played on my record have also played with (among others): Whitney Houston, Santana, Roberta Flack, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, Regina Spektor, Shakira, Ingrid Michaelson, Josh Radin and many more. This is serious company I’m keeping! Not only were they phenomenally talented, but every single one was a total joy to work with.

I was lucky enough to record some of Snow Globe in a beautiful church in upstate New York. It was there that I got to play some sessions on the beautiful 100-year old ‘peacock’ piano you see above.

It was also in this church that the record was expertly mixed by the wonderful Eddie Jackson. Eddie mixed two of my favorite records of the year: The Paper Raincoat’s self-titled debut & Vienna Teng’s Inland Territory (which was just nominated for an Independent Music Award). Alex Wong produced both.

So, to the present:

Writing & recording this album over the last 18 months has been the single greatest achievement of my life. And I’m delighted to announce that within the next 8 weeks I will be releasing it into the wild world!

BUT there are two final pieces of the puzzle:

It need to be mastered & it needs to be pressed.

Mastering:

The record is scheduled to be mastered by Lurssen Mastering in Los Angeles just after the new year. Lurssen’s studios have mastered albums for the likes of Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Diana Krall, Sheryl Crow & Johnny Cash. They also recently mastered the soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire - one of my favorite soundtracks of the year.

Pressing:

The printing of the (eco-friendly) digipaks & pressing of the CD will be done by a fabulous company here on the East coast and will include launching my music across a ton of digital download outlets including iTunes.

PUZZLE SOLVED:

The good folks at Kickstarter.com have let me utilise their acclaimed site to help me get Snow Globe finished. I’m excited to say I’ve been featured as one of the ‘most popular’ projects this week!

P.S. I can’t post it just yet, but I received the first mockup of the album cover a few nights ago. I’m sorry to be a tease and I promise to post the finished article as soon as I can, but let me just say it is absolutely beautiful and I am over the moon with it. It’s being hand drawn & painted by Diana Ho (http://dianaho.blogspot.com). I am being helped with the packaging and CD design by one of my favorite singer-songwriters in NYC, the multi-talented Martin Rivas.

P.P.S. I just uploaded a video to YouTube of a debut performance of a song I wrote this past summer with the incredible Adam Levy. It’s not on Snow Globe, but it WILL be on my next record. It was seriously an honour to write & perform with Adam.

We were aiming to come up with something innocent & old-school/ vintage-y. The song is called ‘A Kiss is as Sweet as it Gets’ and the performance is at The Rockwood Music Hall. Watch it HERE

P.P.S. I just found out I’ve been invited on a song-writing retreat for the last week of January in upstate New York. I can’t name names just yet, but I’ll be up there with a handful of AMAZING artists. I’ll have a different writing partner every day, but we all dine together, and then there’s a show-and-tell every night. The last two nights we’re booked in to play the local Opera House (!) and then on the last day of the week we’ll be recording our favorite songs from the week back in that church I keep talking about. HOW COOL IS THAT?!? I’m so excited I might burst!

P.P.P.S OK I promise this is the last one….I also just wanted you to know that as a result of the buzz surrounding Snow Globe, I recently came to the attention of some movie people. And I’m just starting work on my very next project: COMPOSING THE SCORE FOR A FEATURE FILM! I can’t give away too many details at the moment, but let me just say that I got to watch some early footage with the director and producer this week and it looks beautiful! I can’t wait to sink my teeth into it!
