Pearl & The Beard - Hot Volcano “You’re bad, you’re bad and I like bad”

Well, these guys aren’t bad, but I do like them. Tomorrow they board a flight to the United Kingdom to play their first shows in England, with three in London and one in Manchester! They are playing with a number of different musicians whilst here, so why not go to more than one show? I’m seeing them opening for Jukebox The Ghost (photos from the Monto Water Rats, where I first met Nightmare of You and made some life long friends), who are equally dreamy and who I’ve not seen since the 29th May 2009 (I know this because it was the day before my birthday, and I was in New York seeing them play with Jenny Owen Youngs. You can get information about the Jukebox & Pearl gig here (facebook).

The next day they play at St Pancras Church… I’m pretty excited about that one. (facebook)

Manchester gets Pearl and the Beard at The Castle (facebook)

November the 7th has Amy Lavere headlining with Pearl & The Beard (facebook) at the Lexington, in London.

You can hear songs from their albums at pearlandthebeard.com and all the other musicians have things on the Internet…

Antonio Lulic - The Sound of the Girl Next Door Singing (Feat. Kal Lavelle)

Some great harmonies. You can hear more from Antonio at his site, where he’s also got a bunch of albums available - antoniolulic.com/ Check him out. Fun to see audience members dancing along too. I think she was pretty drunk.

Z-Star, Dizraeli and Kal Lavelle at Lyrix Organix “Relay Loop Session”.

I know I’ve got a high horse when it comes to music at times, hating on simplistic or overly publicised things, or just poor content from musicians but I think the appeal of these three should be fairly obvious with or without my prejudice that talent should prevail. We begin with Z-Star, who has been strumming on her guitar just after playing with Joe Driscoll. See, the relay situation is as follows. Performer 1 and Performer 2 start playing a song together. They make it up on the spot and they just jam, freestyle and see where it goes. Then Performer 3 joins them both, and Performer 1 slowly disappears. This happens all the way up to Performer 6, who joins 4 and 5, and when 4 leaves, is joined by Performer 1 again (full circle). Its considered passing the baton of the song over. The order was Shlomo, Aruba Red, Joe Driscoll, Z-Star, Mc Dizraeli and Kal Lavelle, then back to Shlomo - reverse order of who played their songs to open the set up.

So this part of the video has Z-Star who’s just finished a song about Marijuana and happiness with Joe, to jamming with Dizraeli, who gets words and ideas relating to love from members of the audience, then includes them in his rhymes on stage - because that’s what freestyling is. Making it up on the spot, not just taking pre-written rhymes and putting a different instrumental behind it. This is followed up by Kal Lavelle joining them, and Z-Star departing, for another improv song that I’ve dubbed “Loved His Misses Poorly”. The effortless nature of it all is just insane, and they gel together so well, considering many haven’t played together before.

It reminds me of the Camp Fire series that Martin Rivas and Craig Meyer do. Its just so natural and so easy to like. Its just talent. This is the future of music.
